Murphy had a consistent season reaching a very respectable 5 consecutive ranking event semi finals (The last player to achieve this was Stephen Hendry back in the 1990's. Unfortunately though the only victory he had this season was the Malta Cup. The semi final defeats were :
- At the Royal London watches Grand Prix where Murphy lost 6-5 to Ronnie O'Sullivan.
- At the Northern Ireland Trophy where Murphy lost 6-5 to Stephen Maguire.
- At the Welsh Open where Murphy lost again to Maguire, this time 9-5.
- At the Welsh Open Murphy lost again to O'Sullivan 6-3.
However at the Honghe Industrial China Open Murphy finally beat Mark Selby in the semi final 6-3 to reach the Beijing final. Murphy went on to play a good final and only lost 10-9 in the final to Maguire.
Because of Maguire's consistent play he topped the provisional rankings as he went into the 888.com World Snooker Championship, although this campaign ended in his second defeat to Ali Carter, he then resumed his third place ranking position.
